As with all purchases, there can be significant variations in both price and quality of product. When it comes to higher education, it is important for students interested in an online degree program to recognize that there can be significant variations in price as well as scheduling options.

As but one example, a degree in criminal justice at ITT Technical Institute would cost a student approximately $70,000. That same degree is available at the University of Phoenix for about $37,000.

Should the student be a Tennessee resident, a third option exists. At Middle Tennessee State University the same degree would be in the vicinity of $20,000 for in-state students.

But an additional key factor for students is often convenience. So whereas a Tennessee resident may obtain a degree at Middle Tennessee State for a smaller sum, that same student may opt for the University of Phoenix option because of the convenience associated with the schedule offered by the national online university.

Because most land based schools continue to limit their scheduling options, those students who must work and support a family while attending school may find they have no choice but to select a more expensive option. Still, they should be sure to shop among the various online schools for the most cost-effective option within their area of interest.
