As the Idaho Campus of the University of Phoenix prepares for its fourth commencement ceremony this Saturday, campus directors are noting the amazing juxtaposition that the University has created with its adult learning programs.
With Phoenix set to recognize of 115 nontraditional students, school officials are awaiting a ceremony in which many children, albeit adult children, will cheer on their parents as they receive their first ever college diplomas. Many graduates will be receiving their degrees many years after having completed high school.
Adult students have continued to take advantage of the opportunity afforded them through coursework at one of today's largest virtual universities. The online features of the Phoenix have completely changed the learning experiences and options for all who wish to earn a higher degree, particularly the adult learner who must also hold down a job while attending classes.
Teachers Jon Sowers and Ray Sherwood will also be honored at the ceremony, each being recognized with a Distinguished Faculty Award. Steve Ahrens, the current president of the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry, is scheduled to give the keynote speech while student Robert Jagger will speak as the representative of those receiving their diplomas.
The University reported a total of 130 students had earned their degrees during the last year at the Idaho Campus.
